Personality Disorders

Personality disorders (PD) are mental health conditions characterized by enduring, maladaptive patterns of behavior, thought processes, and internal experiences that lead individuals to act in ways that are inconsistent with or disapproved by their cultural standards. These patterns generally emerge early in life, tend to be inflexible, and frequently result in significant distress or functional impairment. There is no singular cause for personality disorders; rather, a multitude of factors, including genetic and environmental influences, contribute to their development. There are ten recognized types of personality disorders, each associated with persistent disruptive patterns of thinking, mood, behavior, and interpersonal relationships. These disorders are categorized into three clusters:

Cluster A: Paranoid personality disorder, Schizoid personality disorder, Schizotypal personality disorder

Cluster B: Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), borderline personality disorder (BPD), narcissistic personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder.

Cluster C: Avoidant personality disorder, Dependent Personality Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder.

Other and unspecified personality disorders include depressive-cyclothymic, passive-aggressive, masochistic, sadistic, and psychopathy.
